Email Marketing: A/B Split Testing – You CAN Try This At Home

Regardless of what my past teachers would say, I’m a nerd.  I love numbers.  They speak to me and tell beautiful stories.  This is why Internet Marketing suits me so well.  I love data… chances are, you don’t.

But this is an easy application of numbers and testing to use for your Email Marketing campaign, nerd or not.

If your business wants to send an email to 2,000 (or 200,000) subscribers on, say, Thursday, then segment roughly 10% of the list for testing.  Within that sample set divide it into two parts – Group A & B – and  send them similar emails on the prior Monday – Email A & B.  Maybe you decide to only change the subject line for Email A & B, but everything else is the same.  It’s best if you only change one element at a time; the subject line, the delivery time, the product description, etc….

Within days you will know which email better served your business goals.  Based on that statistical information (you can test the statistical significance of your results) you now know which subject line to use with the remaining 90% of your email list on Thursday to achieve stronger results.  Booyah!
